Bluetooth tracker or ordinary nearby device?
You cannot tell from a single scan, and no honest app will claim otherwise. The distinction is behavioural, not technical: an item tracker travelling with you keeps reappearing near you in places that have nothing to do with each other, while an ordinary device appears in one place because that is where it lives. Only a record over time and across locations separates the two.
A Bluetooth scan in any populated area returns a long list. Headphones, watches, fitness bands, televisions, speakers, cars, laptops, tyre-pressure sensors, shop displays, medical devices, and a great many entries with no name at all. Nothing in that list is inherently suspicious. What matters is which entries follow you.
What a scan actually shows you
Bluetooth Low Energy devices announce themselves by broadcasting short advertising packets. A scanner listens and reports what it heard: an identifier, sometimes a name, sometimes some manufacturer-specific data, and a received signal strength.
That is genuinely all. There is no field in an advertisement that says "I am a tracker". Some device types are recognisable from what they advertise; many are not, and item trackers in particular are designed to be small, quiet and unremarkable.
Why a single sighting means nothing
Suppose you scan in a café and find an unnamed device with a strong signal. What are the possibilities?
- Someone at the next table has headphones, a watch or a fitness band.
- The café's own equipment — a card reader, a speaker, a display, a temperature sensor.
- A tracker on the keys of someone who lives nearby.
- A device in a car parked outside.
- Your own equipment, which you have forgotten about.
- An item tracker in your bag that should not be there.
All six produce an identical scan result. The last is by far the least likely, and there is nothing in the single observation that distinguishes it. This is why one scan cannot answer the question and why a strong signal is not evidence of anything — it usually just means something is close, which in a public place is unremarkable.
The behaviour that actually distinguishes a tracker
A tracker attached to you moves with you. That produces a specific pattern:
Suggests something is travelling with you
- The same device appears at your home, at work, and at a shop you visited once
- It is present across a journey, not just at the start and the end
- Its signal strengthens whenever you approach your own bag, coat or car and weakens when you walk away from them
- It persists over days, in locations with nothing in common
Suggests an ordinary nearby device
- It appears in one location and nowhere else
- It vanishes when you leave the building and never returns
- It appears repeatedly at the same place at the same times — a neighbour's routine, an office, a regular train
- It correlates with a device you can see
The middle case is the awkward one: a device you see at home every day and also at your workplace. That could be a tracker, or it could be your own watch, a colleague who commutes the same route, or equipment on a bus you both take. Location diversity is the discriminator — the more unrelated the places, the more meaningful the repetition.
There is also the deliberate difficulty: many trackers rotate their advertised identifier at intervals, specifically so that they cannot be followed between scans by an arbitrary observer. That privacy protection also makes them harder for a third-party detection app to correlate over time, which is a real and unavoidable limit rather than a bug.
If you think something is travelling with you
- Confirm the pattern first. Check across at least a few genuinely different locations before concluding anything. One repeat is coincidence; four unrelated places is a pattern.
- Rule out your own equipment. Watches, earbuds, a case, a car key, a fitness band, a device belonging to someone you travel with. This accounts for most cases.
- Narrow it physically. With scanning open, walk away from your belongings. If the signal weakens with distance from your bag rather than from the room, the source is with you. Then separate your possessions — put the bag down, walk ten paces, watch the reading.
- Search by hand. Pockets, linings, the base of a bag, under seats and in wheel arches of a car, inside a coat hem. Trackers are physically small and often flat.
- Check the operating system's own alerts. iOS has built-in unwanted-tracking notifications for supported tracker types, and many trackers will emit a sound after being separated from their owner for a period. These are more capable in this specific area than any third-party app, because they operate at a level of the system that apps cannot reach.
- If you find something and are concerned for your safety, contact the police rather than handling it yourself. Where a device is, and who put it there, can matter as evidence. Do not confront anyone you suspect.
